Is this race for you?

Pick Austin if you want a full festival: three big concerts come with your race ticket, the general admission hills give real views, and there is Texas barbecue on site. Think twice if you hate heat, long walks or traffic. The circuit is about 15 miles (24 km) from downtown, there is no public transport to the gates, and leaving after the race on Sunday takes hours.

04Getting there and parking

COTA is about 15 miles (24 km) southeast of downtown Austin and about 9 miles from the airport. There is no train or city bus to the circuit, so you'll use a shuttle, rideshare, your own car or a helicopter. Tap an option for the details.

Airport

Austin-Bergstrom International (AUS) is the closest airport, about 9 miles from COTA. A taxi or rideshare to the circuit or downtown takes 20 to 40 minutes outside race traffic.

Flying into another city

If flights to Austin are expensive, fans fly into San Antonio (about 1 hour 20 minutes' drive), Houston (about 2 hours 40) or Dallas (3.5 to 4 hours) and rent a car. If you do, plan a Thursday to Monday trip.

Official shuttles
  • Downtown: Waterloo Park, from $49. Drops off near the Grand Plaza.
  • Northeast: Travis County Expo Center, from $34.
  • Run from about 60 minutes before gates open. Children 3 and under ride free.
  • Last bus to COTA: 6:30pm Fri and Sat, 2pm Sun.
  • Back to town: until 60 minutes after the music ends Fri and Sat.
  • Card only. Standby passes at pickup are not guaranteed.
Uber, Lyft and taxis

Drop-off and pick-up are only at the McAngus lot. Rideshare cars cannot use COTA Blvd on race weekend. Free trams run from McAngus to the Grand Plaza box office. Expect surge prices: one fan was quoted about $81 back to town a couple of hours after Saturday's sessions.

Driving and parking

You need a parking pass bought in advance. Cars without one cannot get onto COTA Blvd. Most fans come via the TX-130 toll road: exit 451 (Elroy Rd) for Lots C to L, R and S, or exit 453 (FM-812) for Lots A, N and T. Leaving, a fan tip: if there's a queue to turn left onto Elroy Rd, go straight onto Kellam Rd towards Highway 71. Allow 15 to 20 minutes to walk back to your car.

Helicopter

BLADE flies from Creedmoor to COTA in about five minutes (by the seat or private charter). Book early.

Bike

COTA publishes a bike route map. Check it before you ride: the roads near the circuit are busy and not built for cyclists.

Leaving on Sunday is the hard part. Stay for Alesso, or relax until the crowds thin. Don't book a flight out on Sunday evening.

07What to bring and rules

Bags must be smaller than 12 x 12 x 20 inches (30 x 30 x 50 cm), so a normal backpack is fine. The Super Stage concert area is stricter: a clear bag up to 12 x 12 x 6 inches, a 1-gallon clear zip bag or a small clutch.

Allowed

  • One empty water bottle (up to 32 oz) or empty CamelBak
  • Collapsible chairs
  • Small hand-held umbrellas
  • Blankets and binoculars
  • Sunscreen in plastic bottles
  • Baby strollers, and collapsible wagons in GA

Not allowed

  • Outside food and drink, including alcohol
  • Coolers, thermoses and ice chests
  • Glass
  • Drones
  • Non-collapsible chairs, tents and canopies
  • Pets (service animals are fine)
  • Signs over 11 x 17 inches, or on a pole
  • Aerosols, balls, frisbees, balloons and horns

Must bring

  • Your ticket in your phone wallet, added before you leave (signal is slow in big crowds)
  • A card or phone wallet: COTA is cashless
  • An empty water bottle to refill for free
  • Hat, sunglasses, sunscreen lotion (sprays get taken at the gate) and a light rain jacket: there's little shade, and it's rain or shine
  • Electrolyte sachets for the heat
  • Shoes you can walk miles in
  • Earplugs or ear defenders, especially for children
  • A charged power bank. Charging stations get busy

Where to sit, and who it suits

  1. Best for first-timers

    Turn 1 grandstand

Best for the start. Cars climb a steep hill and brake hard into a tight left. Lots of first-lap moves.

  2. Best for car nerds

    Turn 4 grandstand

Faces the fast Turns 3 to 6 'esses'. Great for seeing how the cars change direction.

  3. Best for overtakes

    Turn 12 grandstand

Cars brake hard here after the long back straight. The most likely place for an overtake.

  4. Best for wide views

    Turn 15 grandstand

A wide view over Turns 12 to 16, close to the Grand Plaza and the amphitheater.

  5. Best for pit stops + podium

    Main Grandstand

Pit stops, the start grid and the podium celebrations. The most expensive grandstand.

  6. Best for budget + freedom

    General admission

Grass areas around Turns 1, 3 to 6, 9, 11, 17 and 19, plus the big field inside Turns 7 to 10. Cheapest way in, but bring a chair and get there early on Sunday.

Avoid scams

  • Buy from the COTA website, which sends you to Ticketmaster, or from F1 Experiences. Anything else is resale.
  • COTA tickets are mobile tickets in your Ticketmaster account. A screenshot or PDF is not a valid ticket.
  • Buying from a person? Ask them to send the ticket by Ticketmaster transfer, and only pay once it shows in your account.
  • Never pay a stranger by bank transfer, Zelle or crypto. Use a credit card so you can dispute the charge.
  • Resale sites like StubHub are legal but often charge well above face value once fees are added. Compare with COTA first.

09Fan tips

You will walk a lot

The circuit is huge. Use the free trams around the outside, but expect queues in the heat. Wear shoes you have already broken in.

Move during sessions

Queues for water, food and toilets are shortest while cars are on track. Fans say water lines can hit 30 minutes between sessions.

Find shade early

Shade is hard to find. Grandstand fans can leave and come back: re-entry is allowed if you scan your ticket on the way out.

Claiming a GA spot

Collapsible chairs and blankets are allowed. Fans put them down to claim a spot, then leave them while they get food. Take your valuables with you.

Use the concerts

Fans who stayed for the Friday and Saturday concerts say leaving afterwards was easy. Leaving straight after the race on Sunday was the worst part of their weekend.

Explore on Friday

Walk the whole site on Friday and watch from different corners. You can see a lot of the track from most spots.

Grandstand seats

Fans say most grandstands apart from the Main Grandstand are bleachers with no backrests and no shade. Go for higher rows if you can.

Accessibility

  • Accessible seats are in the Main Grandstand, Turn 12 and Turn 15. Ask for them when you buy, using 'Request Accessible Tickets' on Ticketmaster.
  • Accessible parking needs a disabled placard (holder in the car, ID needed) and a parking pass. First come, first served.
  • Text COTA to 69050 for an accessible shuttle or golf cart outside the gates. ADA golf carts wait at the ADA tents next to shuttle stops.
  • General admission ADA viewing areas are at Turns 3-5, The Ranch and Fan Field.
  • Sensory rooms are in the Grand Plaza. Family restrooms are behind the Turn 15 grandstand and in the Main Grandstand.
  • Elevators: Main Grandstand, the Turn 3 bridge, the Support Paddock bridge and the Observation Tower.
  • Children under 3 don't need a ticket.

11Fun facts

The red Observation Tower at Circuit of the Americas
The red Observation Tower at Circuit of the Americas. Photo: Agustin Leandro/Unsplash
  1. COTA borrows corners from famous tracks: Turns 3 to 6 copy Silverstone's Maggotts and Becketts, and the Turn 16 to 18 sweep is modelled on Istanbul Park's Turn 8.
  2. It is one of the few F1 tracks that runs anticlockwise.
  3. The climb from the start line to Turn 1 is steeper than 11%. From the stands it looks like the cars are driving up a wall.
  4. The red Observation Tower is 77 m (251 ft) tall, with a viewing deck 70 m up. You can visit it during the race weekend.
  5. The first race in 2012 drew 117,429 fans. Lewis Hamilton won it, passing pole-sitter Sebastian Vettel during the race.
  6. In 2022 around 440,000 people came over three days, a record for an F1 race in North America.
  7. The 2020 race was cancelled because of Covid-19. Fans' tickets were honoured in 2022.
  8. There is a 'World's Largest Cowboy Hat' in Lonestar Land. It is on the official map.
